Unhyphenated Identities

Across Europe, postmigrants face pressure from two directions at once: host societies that question their loyalty, and homelands that seek to reclaim it. The result is a steady erosion of dual or hyphenated identity - the capacity to feel genuinely at home in two cultures. Drawing on interviews, large-scale surveys, and newly collected data, Aydin Bayad traces that erosion among Turkish and Post-Soviet communities in Germany. He introduces a new framework for understanding how people interpret rejection to uncover the psychological and political forces that reshape belonging over time.
